甘露地处无锡鹅肫荡畔,无锡、吴县、常熟三县交界的水网地带,是物产富饶的鱼米乡,又兼商业繁荣,素有“金甘露”之称。据《锡金考乘》载:泰伯携弟仲雍避居荆蛮,一夕忽有甘露降其地,甘露下降,以示祥瑞,故取地名为“甘露”并置市,至今已有3000多年历史。镇上的江南名刹甘露寺建于唐乾符三年(公元876年),全国各地有好几座甘露寺,但以甘露为地名者仅此一地,且历史悠久,可以说是绝无仅有。百年老校——无锡市甘露学校就座落在甘露镇翰林桥堍。
