Parents of French-speaking parents in the northern suburbs of Montreal, asking their children to speak a second language, asked the school authorities five years ago to offer Immersion English classes in the sixth and sixth graders. This is the beginning of a bilingual class in French speaking. In 1974, school authorities in Mille-Iles evaluated immersion French teaching classes and compared their scores to those received by immigrant schools in the Church Schools of Montreal. We remember that these classes received all immigrants from Québec, and that they should have a good grasp of the initial level of speaking before immigrants could enter regular French-speaking classes. These achievements show that on average, about five months have passed since the French-speaking classes were conducted without any textbooks.
