汽缸套、活塞环是发动机上的重要基础件,其材质耐磨性的优劣直接影响到发动机的使用寿命。因此,提高它们的耐磨性对发展国民经济和实现四个现代化具有极其重要的意义。从二十年代开始,人们就对铸铁汽缸套的耐磨性和铸铁的金相组织及化学成份之间的关系进行了系统的研究。从珠光体铸铁进而到应用高磷铸铁。1958年日本报导了在铸铁中加入硼,使之在凝固时析出高硬度的碳化物来提高耐磨性,获得较好的效果。
