学者陈之藩年轻时,无钱去美国留学。曾资助过许多贫困青年的胡适听说后,送给他一张400美元的支票。陈之藩后来把钱还给胡适,还写了一封信向胡适表示感谢。胡适接到信后,给陈之藩回信“:谢谢你的来信和支票,其实你不应该这样急于还此400美元。我借出去的钱,从来不盼望收回,因为我知道借出去的钱总是‘一本万利’,永远有利息在人间。”陈之藩后来说“:我每读这封信时,并不落泪,而是想洗个澡。我感觉自己很污秽,因为我从来没有过这样澄明的见解和这样宽广的胸怀。”
