Critics usually interpret Jane Smyrley’s Pulitzer Prize-winning novel, 1992, from the perspective of “One Thousand Acres” of Shakespeare’s play “King Lear,” and from the perspective of ecofeminism Interpreting the novel and trying to clarify that “One Thousand Acres” perfectly reproduces the view of ecofeminism: In a patriarchal society, men dominate women and nature in one another and reinforce each other. By telling the story of the heroine, Jeannie, Smyrley criticized and protested the tendency of men to exploit objects of nature and women.
