穆旦,原名查良铮,出身于浙江海宁查氏名门,生于天津,与联大教授查良钊、现代武侠小说大家金庸(查良镛)是同族兄弟。在南开中学读书时,穆旦就有文章发表,后考入清华大学,随校南迁至长沙,又至昆明。1940年8月,穆旦以优异的成绩毕业于西南联大外文系,留校担任外文系助教。当年7月,日军侵占安南,原来是大后方的云南一下子成为前线。
