美国是当今世界体育强国。美国体育教师在塑造体育强国地位的进程中发挥着举足轻重的作用。七十年代末期,由于受到传统观念的影响,美国体育教师一般只限在公立学校和教会学校供职,曾经一度出现体育教师供大于求,谋职难的现象。迫使一部分人改行从事其他职业。进入八十年代以后,情况逐步发生变化,一方面因为美国学校数量不断增加;另一方面体育教师的服务范围也在逐渐拓宽。社会对体育教师的需要量明显增加。只要具备承担体育教学职业的知识技能,并且取得任职资格证书,体育教师谋职已经不再成为问题。
