包头水文地质站均衡试验场建于1957年12月。研究内容根据供水工作的需要,偏重于地下水的补给及蒸发排洩等问题,且正在向综合研究的方向发展。气象观测方面,试验场安装有测量气温、降水、温度、蒸发、气压、风向、风速、地温、冻结深度的仪器;用潛水均衡计(地中渗水计,研究潛水补给、渗入、凝结)及蒸发,试验深度为0.5、1.1、2.1、4.0及10.7公尺,后者接近潛水面。另外人工组合的三种岩样一粘砂土、中砂、礫石一各装在深0.5、1.0及1.5公尺
