The influenza virus contains two glycoproteins, hemagglutinin and neuraminidase, which make up the outer membrane of the virus. Past studies have shown that these two glycoproteins are glycosylated within cells by means of cell-specific enzymes. The entire composition of their carbohydrates is very similar to the host cell. The genome of the virus does not seem to encode for glycosyltransferases.
