The musical “Maggie’s Gift”, created by the Sichuan People’s Art Theater, is a short story of the same name adapted from the American writer 欧 · 亨利. It tells the story of a pair of poor young couple, Della and Jim, presenting Christmas gifts each other. The theme is clear, triggering the audience’s deep thinking of the present life. This article elaborates in detail how the writer transformed through the creative stage in the process of changing from a novel to a musical in three aspects: the stage transformation at the end of “European Henry”, the new deconstruction of the climax scene and the comprehensive expression of the stage modernity. Art narrates the plot of the story, displays the psychology of the characters, shows the strong vitality of the famous works of literature, and excavates its new connotation with the development of the times and the society so as to create a musical play with independent artistic value and character.
