The debate between Black and Davidson about the existence of metaphorical meanings is the concentrated reflection of the debate on the semantics and pragmatics of contemporary metaphorical research. Black and Davidson chose to correct the theory of logical positivism in different ways to confirm the theory. Different concepts of meaning made them give different answers to this question. Despite the differences in metaphorical significance, both Blake and Davidson recognize the integrity and non-reductiveness of metaphors, allowing them to stand side by side from the Aristotelian side to the opposite of the traditional metaphorical metaphor of logical positivism, Thus jointly promoting the development of contemporary metaphor theory.
