The Japanese population has a lower rate of death from coronary heart disease than other industrialized countries. We investigated HDL-C levels in six Japanese populations with different lifestyles (1,804 males and 1,561 females). It was found that HDL-C in Japanese men aged 40-69 was approximately 55 mg%, or approximately 10 mg% higher than male Americans in the same age group. Recently, the preventive effect of HDL-C on coronary heart disease has received extensive attention. We investigated if the Japanese population had a high risk of coronary heart disease due to high HDL-C levels.
