This paper aims at distinguishing four synonyms “hinder ”,“impede ”,“obstruct” and “block” by retrieving in the corpus of COCA.The distinction of these four synonyms is made from three perspectives:distribution,colligation and collocation.The results show that the main differences of these four synonyms lie in the noun collocates (objects) of these verbs and the registers where these verbs apply.This study is also one of the examples proving that corpus is a powerful tool for distinguishing synonyms.
