Canterbury Mayor Johnson has visited the Soviet Union and European peoples’ democracies on numerous occasions and visited the post-liberation China. He made an objective observation of these countries and wrote several books on his observations. His “One-sixth Socialist World” was published shortly before World War II and was warmly welcomed by readers. It has already appeared in the twenty-second edition. After the war he also wrote two books on the Soviet Union, a book on New China (“China’s new creation era”) and recently published this book on the democracies of Eastern Europe. This “Eastern Europe in the socialist world” is the first book published by Britain that gives a more comprehensive and objective report on the democratization of Europe’s peoples.
