The huge number of drilling and drilling rigs in most areas, continued investment in rigs and ancillary equipment, and a huge drilling program by operators all signal a year of strong drilling prospects. The basin of the United States and Canada will be the best choice to meet North American demand growth in the next 58 years, before liquid natural gas is realized. Although the demand for natural gas is on the rise, it is estimated that onshore drilling rigs will have a far lower average daily footage in 2004 than the highest value in 2001. The target audience for Nabors drilling companies has been transferred from Canada (47% in 2001; currently 23%) to Canada and other countries (16% in 2001; currently 37%). In order to maintain its production level, Canada needs to newly drill 16,000 gas wells annually by 2012. At the same time, Canadian domestic oil companies have invested more in E & P (exploration and development) than oil companies in other countries and have provided promising prospects for signing new contracts. Precision has developed three new international markets for drilling units: India, the Middle East and Mexico. In Oman, the company drilled 32 horizontal wells in 18 months and renewed the contract in January 2004. In Mexico, the company drilled a total of 413 directional drilling rigs in December 2003 at a contractual cost of $ 220 million. Apache, a Houston-based company, considered 2003 to be an extremely successful year with a 22% increase in production and a profit of 1.16 billion U.S. dollars and a revenue of 1.5 billion U.S. dollars in the North Sea and the Gulf of Mexico. In 2004, Apache’s exploration and development budget was 181.9 billion U.S. dollars (of which 10 million U.S. dollars was in North America)
