Sporadic attempts to eliminate the pressures on the forests in the northwestern Pacific have been frustrated and often counterproductive. As an alternative approach, this article sets out a long-term goal for the region’s forests, followed by a number of specific policies that will help to shift that goal. The purpose of running a Washington forest is usually to improve people’s welfare and improve the environment. Specific tasks include maintaining biological diversity, enhancing the protection of the global environment and increasing the economic productivity of residents and landowners.
