The National Cancer Center Hospital of Tokyo removed 492 primary tumors from 1984 to 1991, including 12 deaths (2.4%) a month. Of the 94 cases (19.1%) with incomplete resection, 23 cases had no tumor capsules, 11 tumors broke through the capsule, 18 had margins of tumor cells, and 36 had undergone tumor reduction surgery in order to preserve limited liver function.
