有的好心朋友对高长虹晚年遭际的实际情形不了解,发出了这样的慨叹:“一个很明显的事实:高长虹到解放区后,创作热情不仅没有被大大地激发出来,反而逐步走向萎缩,日趋衰落,终于没有能再振狂飙雄风。”(李文儒:《高长虹现象与高长虹之谜》刊于《高长虹研究文选》1991年4月北岳文艺出版社出版) 从表面情景看确乎如此。高长虹到延安后,发表的作品由多到少,由少到无;参加的社会活动由频繁到寂寥,由寂寥到消声匿迹。他的走向是从风光一时到逐步地“从文坛以至于整个社会生活中退出和消失”,直到晚年被当成“疯子”推来搡去,连下落都无人知晓了。高长虹的晚年确乎是“萎缩”了。
