在上个世纪二三十年代的中国文坛上,许多作家致力于揭示半殖民地半封建社会的政治黑暗和城乡经济破产的严峻现实,而沈从文却执着地展示偏处一隅的湘西的风物地貌、人情世态,构筑了一个鲜活而富有魅力的艺术世界——“湘西世界”。这使不少读者甚至学者认为沈从文就是湘西世界的歌者,那些最易为读者感知的风貌,遮蔽了其作品中隐含的深层的乡土忧患。
