中国与西方(这里的西方主要是指欧洲国家)同样都是古老文明的发源地之一,处在同一块大陆上的两个不同的方位,同时产生出三个不同的古老文明这在世界范围内是绝无仅有的,四大文明古国中古中国,古印度和古巴比伦;就连远在非洲大陆的古埃及文明,与亚洲大陆的文明也只是隔一个海峡的距离,那么在这样一片区域内出现几个影响世界文明进程的古老文明却有着异样的文化,从相距距离上来看,古中国与古代的欧洲交流频繁,却依旧没能弥合两个地区文化差异的根本。单单从文化差异上来说,欧洲人的长诗和中国人的短诗的产生虽然是一个很小的一个方面,但是却体现了两种文化中不同的性格和思维方式。
