粘土矿物在沉积岩中是一种分布最广的矿物,在各类沉积岩中无一不有粘土矿物存在,所以对粘土矿物的研究,就更具有普遍意义。粘土矿物又因为它对各种物理化学条件具有一定的敏感性,根据演变程度可作为衡量沉积环境和地球化学分析的标志矿物;由于它的质点小,具有较大的表面积,对石油的形成具催化作用,所以它又和生油有密切关系,但由于它有遇水膨胀性,又为注水采油带来很多麻烦。因而研究沉积岩中的粘土矿物,无论是对生油岩的分析、储油层的探讨,以及油层改造,都是十分重要的。
