DVD系统的激光碟片有双面和双层两种形式。双面碟片为两张0.6mm激光碟片,背靠背粘合而成,外形与影碟片相似,技术上没有太多突破。双层激光碟片则是一种新颖的盘片,“层”指的是记录面,在一个几何面上有两个记录面,下图是两种0.6mm×2粘合的盘片结构。使用双层碟片要求DVD机的激光头具有双焦距功能,如东芝已推出的SD-5型。唱片的关键技术在于第一记录面的材料为半透明反射涂层。
