Japan is a mountainous island nation with a land area of 370,000 square kilometers and a forest area of 250,000 square kilometers. The forest recovery rate is 64%, which is second only to Finland (69%). The forest reserves are about 1.9 billion cubic meters, with an estimated total annual growth of 62 million cubic meters. The forest is one of Japan’s major natural resources.
