At the University of Mississippi, an in-house antiviral screening program was established to test samples of 21 selected plants. These plants were selected based on folk use or the presence of lignans in the family, increasing the likelihood of positive results. The percentage of plants that showed antiviral activity against rhinovirus 1A or herpes simplex virus type 1 (19%) was within the range of percentage of plants with antiviral activity that were screened by other screening methods on an analogous basis. This article also screened the antibacterial activity and toxicity of plant extracts on sea shrimp. All biological activity screening results are correlated with the collected basis.
