At the end of the nineteenth century, there were a few‘horseless carriages’ on the roads, but most of them were driven by electricity or steam. Herr Otto had invented an engine which ran on petrol. It did not actually drive anything, but thousands of people paid good money to see the model engine working away by itself. Henry saw it too. At once he imagined an engine like that, on wheels, driving a car or bicycle.
