The University of California, Berkeley is located in Berkeley, across the sea from San Francisco. Two years ago I was invited to this visit. I made some sketchy notes during my stay. I will now copy some of them for reference purposes only. Berkeley is a comprehensive university covering an area of 1,234 acres. There are 3,600 teaching staff, 6,000 formal staff and 31,500 students of all kinds. From the art history department I visited, according to statistics from 1989, there were 15 faculty members including a part-time director. There are ten professors, two associate professors, and three assistant professors (whose position is between lecturers and associate professors). Each side, the basic research topics are not repeated. There are also six professor emeriti professors who do not have specific teaching assignments. About four staff members of the departmental office are responsible for handling routine documents such as letter papers and registrations.
