In 1997, ILSI-SEAR held its first RDA forum in Singapore. Representatives from Indonesia, Malaysia, the Philippines, Thailand and Vietnam and Southeast Asian food and nutritionists attended the meeting and agreed that an RDA needs to be set up between countries in the region to facilitate popular science education and improve public health. The meeting agreed to hold a symposium to promote the progress of the research project in the region, including the implementation of programs, views, terminology, applications, frameworks and planned progress.
