The major metallurgical issues for large rotor forgings are related to the maximum size and quality of ingot forgings. At present, the steel mills, limited by the lifting equipment, can produce about 200 to 240 tons of the largest forgings and about 350 to 500 tons of steel slabs. With such a large weight, only a few cranes can lift the cranes. Thus, the level of thermal power plant units and the ability to further utilize economic indicators are limited by the maximum size of rotor forgings that can be produced. Although the quality problem is of little relevance, there is a certain possibility that the rotor in operation will explode, causing catastrophic damage to the power station, endangering life and huge losses of property. From 1950 to 1977, thirty rotors exploded in power plants around the world. Given that most power plants are still operating, the exploding rotor can be considered rather small, but its consequences are severe and stress should be minimized.
