Objective To investigate the expression and correlation of transforming growth factor β1 (TGFβ1) and proliferating cell nuclear antigen (PCNA) in gliomas. Methods According to WHO criteria, the expressions of TGFβ1 and PCNA in 35 gliomas and 7 normal brain tissues were detected by immunohistochemistry. The correlation between them was analyzed. Results TGFβ1 and PCNA protein were expressed in glioma cells in varying degrees, which were positively correlated with each other (r = 0.78, P <0.01), and they were compared with each other in normal brain tissue, low grade and high grade glioma The differences were statistically significant (P <0.05). Conclusion The positive expression of TGFβ1 in human gliomas is closely related to the cell proliferation activity and histological grade. It may be involved in the malignant transformation of human glioma cells.
