The introduction of the “Taichung65” low amylose trait into “IR36” was based on the following recent advances in rice genetics. There are several alleles in W_x locus: W_x ~ a controls high amylose, W_x ~ b controls low amylose, and recessive gene WX. 2. Most Javanese rice, with medium or low amylose content, and almost all of the japonica rice, when crossed with the IR variety, their F_1 hybrids are sterile. This is because female gametes with S_5 ~ i or similar alleles are aborted due to the allelic interaction of the S_5 ~ i / S_5 ~ i genotype (S_5 ~ i from the IR variety).
