长寿果又名蒙山冬红海棠,是沂蒙山区的园艺工作者用蒙山海棠(当地俗称蒙山甜茶)作砧木,用美国冬红海棠作接穗嫁接而得的。适宜作盆栽和园林绿化栽培。春天播种,秋天嫁接,从小苗到成型结果大约3～5年。4月开花,花簇状,初呈粉红色,渐转为白色,花期20余天,白花授粉。果实圆球形,大小如葡萄,光洁亮丽,先青后红,11月成熟。果实经冬不落,一直挂至次年,故名长寿果。近年来市场上出售的长寿果植株,也有用木瓜海棠或苹果树作砧木嫁接的。
