随着网络应用的增多和发展,对接入带宽的需求也呈逐渐增长的趋势。已有30年发展历史的以太网技术(Ethernet 802.3标准)在近些年来也有了突飞猛进的发展。在2002年7月正式发布了IEEE 802.3ae标准,10Gbps速率随之诞生。此次以太网在速率上的跃升与以往不同的地方在于,干兆以太网大多应用于局域网(LAN),传输介质仍采用铜质的双绞线,传输距离短。而万兆以太网采用的是光纤通信技术,传输距离可达10公里以上,其传输速率亦可与广域网(WAN-Wide Area Network) 常见的SONET/SDH的OC-192速度相匹配,甚至还能够在城域网(MAN)中与SONET/SDH接轨。为了迎接万兆以太网时代的到来,以及统一通信设备的连接标准,业界因此制定了所谓的多源协议MSA(Multi Source Agreement),MSA协议也可应用于更高速率的产品。如依MSA协议研制的XENPAK光收发器模块也广泛为业界所接受。现在业界期望能够将万兆以太网的成本控制在干兆以太网的3倍以内。
