本文通过对加拿大作家艾莉丝·门罗(Alice Munro)在一九七七年出版的一篇短篇小说《乞丐女郎》(The Beggar Maid)的情节设置、人物塑造和主题阐述等方面所采用的并置和对比手法的分析,探讨该作品中反映出的门罗在文学创作方面的主要特点。因为门罗的主旨是描述平凡生活中的普通人所经历的爱和恨以及从爱到恨这两个感情极端之间的一系列微妙的情感层次和剖面,她在《乞丐女郎》中不仅巧妙地把对比用作一个重要的手段,而且还多层次、多方位地把现实生活中诸如富与贫和社会阶层的高与低之间的对比和差异作为故事的主题。《乞丐女郎》堪称门罗的代表作,实在值得我们对其作进一步的分析和探讨。
