It is estimated that more than 200 million women worldwide smoke. If this continues, and to maintain the current long-term smoking prevalence of men and women in the world, by 2025, 9% of global deaths and disability will be linked to smoking. Smoking is associated with increased cardiovascular disease, cancer (lung, cervix, pancreas, kidney, bladder, esophagus and throat), lung disease, cerebrovascular disease, and many other health risks. Smoking also has adverse effects on fertility and reproductive outcomes. Although smoking rates among women in developed countries are higher than those in developing countries, a survey in developing countries shows that the number of smokers is increasing. If this trend remains unchanged, the adverse effects of smoking on women will obviously continue to widen.
