Serum vitamin A levels are elevated in patients with chronic renal failure (CRF), but little is known about the possible toxicity of vitamin A excess. The authors examined the relationship between serum vitamin A concentrations in patients undergoing regular hemodialysis for a group of CRFs and various biochemical, radiological, and histological features of skeletal disease. Thirty-eight patients had an average age of 42.0 ± SD of 12.7 years and an average of 55.4 ± 43.5 months of patients without parathyroidectomy and taking vitamin D or metabolites, but 24 of them took multiple daily vitamin supplements 1 to 6 tablets, each containing vitamin A 500 IU and vitamin D 2 250IU. Many patients take aluminum hydroxide preparations. Serum vitamin A, calcium, phosphorus and alkaline phosphatase concentrations were measured in all patients. Serum hydroxyproline concentrations were measured in 30 patients and immunoreactive parathyroid hormone concentrations in 20 patients. Fasting blood was drawn after dialysis for more than 36 hours. 28 cases of normal control
