《说文解字》鬯部有“郁”字,其下云:“芳艸也。十叶为贯,百廿贯筑以煮之为郁。一曰郁鬯,百艸之华,远方郁人所贡芳艸,合酿之以降神。郁,今郁林郡也。”许氏认为,郁是一种芳草的名字,这种草被“筑以煮之”之后仍叫郁。郁又指郁鬯,即用远方郁人所贡芳草与百草之花合酿之物。所谓“郁人”之“郁”即指郁林郡,是地名。一个字的本义被如此复杂地描述、申发,在《说文》当中是比较少见的。
