The Japanese are convinced that the control of biotechnology will open up a new “human realm.” At the same time they hope to lead the world to explore the trend of this unknown area. When Americans feel irritable about the consequences of biotechnology, the Japanese government has decided to grasp the mechanism of life. The commercial promotion of the biotechnology revolution in the next two decades has become Japan's highest priority national goal. The “Human New Field Program,” Japan's most ambitious new science program, is the most obvious manifestation of this resolve.
