穿山隧道,是现今公路及铁路建设中经常遇到的艰巨工程。然而,早在一千九百多年前,我国劳动人民在开辟险峻的褒斜栈道的过程中,即凿通了我国乃至世界上最早的人工穿山隧道——石门。褒斜栈道是中国古代艰难蜀道上的一条交通要道。出今陕西省汉中市往北约20公里就到褒斜栈道南口,由此沿褒谷向北上溯,至古之衙岭山(今五里坡),经斜谷至今陕西关中眉县的斜峪关,又称阁道。历史文献中,早在《战国策.秦策》中就有所谓“栈道千里,通于蜀汉”的记载
