苏南地区极大部分土壤由于经受了人类高度耕种活动的影响,而有其特有的土壤发育形式,即差不多无处不是耕种土壤,而且多半是以发展灌溉为主的耕种土壤.但又由于自然历史以及社会经济等原因,其中仍旧产生了很多在性质上互有差别的土壤类型.这次苏南地区土壤调查和分类的目的,就在于要把这些形形色色而且是错综复杂的土壤(主要指耕种土壤),加以系统的和比较细致的区分,通过这一区分不仅在理论上能反映出它们彼此之间在发育上的联系,而已更重要的是能为今后土壤改良、土壤合理利用以及进一步提高土壤肥力提供明确的线索和建立一个稳固的基础.
