是先有编辑还是先有书,恐怕是一个与先有鸡还是先有蛋一样说不清楚的问题。这不去说。编辑和书倒是天生有必然的关联,不仅仅是因为工作,不仅仅是要制作书、从如下旧事里我们或许可以觅得一些启示的。 书目之争 1923年初,胡适曾给青年开过一个《最低限度的国学书目》,初有190种书目,曾引起轩然大波。后精简为39种。而在此前的1920年后,开风气之先的胡适也曾拟有一个大致类似的书目叫做《中学国故丛书目录》。不过影响并不太大。 梁启超就很不以为然,也应《清华周刊》之约拟了一个书目(26种),并写了《评胡适之一个最低限度的国学书目》和《治国学杂话》两文,其中指出:“胡君这个书目我是不赞成的,因为它文不对题。”又说:“一张书目名字叫做《国学最低限度书目》,里头有什么《三侠五义》、《九命奇冤》,却没有《史记》、《汉书》、《资治通鉴》,岂非笑话?”“若说不读《三侠五义》、《九命奇冤》便够不上国学最低限度,不瞒胡君说,区区小子,便是没有读过这两部书的人。我虽自知学问浅陋,但说我连国学最低限度都没有,我却不服。” 章太炎1924年在《华国月刊》上也开列了一个《中学国文书目录》计39种,自然他侧重的国学是以经学为主的。
