The theory of control systems is applicable to many naval command, control and communication problems. This article provides an overview of the work on control systems conducted by the Navy’s Electronic Equipment Laboratory at the time of the development of the Navy’s allegations and communications systems. The three areas covered here are: (1) surface ship navigation data processing; (2) shipboard inter-detector relationships; and (3) aiming and tracking of narrow beam communication systems. Kalman filter theory has many applications in naval command and control systems. The navigation data processing system developed for the destroyer is an example of the application that was introduced, and this Kalman filter is implemented on the accusation computer. Describes the interrelationships between detectors and outlines some recent work in this area. Describe a typical aiming and tracking system designed to illustrate the control technology and computer hardware used to design the Navy’s optical and microwave communication systems for the future. The Universal Digital Controller is used to illustrate the role of microelectronic devices in the implementation of a control system.
