This paper describes the importance of the construction of the On-Network Documentation and Information Sharing System and the significance of accomplishing the automation, electronization and networking of the documentation and information service. It presents the history and current status of the documentation and information system of the Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS) and puts forward the short-term tasks and development countermeasures in view of the existing difficulties and problems.
