1937年“七·七”芦沟桥事变,标志着抗日战争全面爆发。在抗敌御侮、救亡图存的抗日斗争中,我国人民及海外侨胞,表现了空前的爱国热忱。在海外侨胞中,陈嘉庚是爱国侨胞的突出代表。陈嘉庚先生在雅加达一次集会上说:“我国政治如能办好,华侨心理中的愉快,比霎时获利数十万元当更狂喜”①。早在1928年5月3日,“济南惨案”发生,日军借口保护日侨,派兵占领济南,杀戮我外交官蔡公时及许多民众。消息传到新加坡,陈嘉庚先生立即于5月17日在怡和轩俱乐部②召开各界代表大会,呼吁侨胞,救济祖国难民,抵制日货。他亲任新加坡“山东惨祸筹赈
In 1937, the “July 7th” Lugouqiao Incident marked the outbreak of the War of Resistance Against Japan. In the anti-Japanese struggle against the enemy and saving lives, our people and overseas compatriots demonstrated unprecedented patriotic enthusiasm. Among the overseas Chinese, Tan Kah Kee is an outstanding representative of patriotic overseas Chinese.
