In the last days of Christopher Higgins, Ian McEwan, a longtime friend, came to the intensive care unit in Houston. Higgins first saw Peter Acreyd’s new book in his bag about the history of London. They talked for about 10 minutes before he said hello. Then Higgins started to take a pencil in his book to make notes. He read the entire book in the evenings, accompanied by regular anesthesia in the tubes and a multifunctional respiratory machine around him.
