仙人掌科的蟹爪兰、仙人指均是当今流行的冬季盆花。从花色上看,仙人指比较单调,基本为玫红色,蟹爪兰则红、紫、粉红、橙黄、白及复色均有。花期上,蟹爪兰为11月至翌年1月;仙人指为1～3月。而我国向来有注重春节的传统习惯,如果能让仙人指在蟹爪兰开花的时候开放,并且花色丰富一些,自然再好不过了。为此,笔者于1998年6月以仙人指为母本,以蟹爪兰为父本进行种间杂交,育出了‘金色骑士’、‘艳阳’、‘春姑娘’等优良杂交种,我们终于可以在春节期间观赏到中国产的自然花期的艳丽的仙人
