In 1982, SELI won the bid to build the 7.2 km S Sofia pressure tunnel in the Acquedotto della Romagna project near Forli, Italy. Dr. Carlo Grandori gives a detailed technical specification for Robbins’ 3.5-m diameter Type 118-221 hard-rock double-shield tunnel boring machine. The excavation, along with the SELI-designed back-up system, traverses a 6.2km flysch formation that includes a large range of fault zones that extend over 1,500 meters. The average monthly footage was 520m, with eight weeks stopping work on a clay-filled fault that consolidated 40m wide.
