抽象表现主义又称为“行动绘画”是20世纪50年代美国最狂热抽象画派。它强调画家行动的自由和无目的性,把创作行为本身提高到重要位置,以“潜意识”为创作动力,强调主观精神的强烈表现。在美术领域,新思路、新观念、新的艺术样式不断出现。
