Paul Lawrence Dunbar (1872-1906) is an African-American poet, novelist and playwright of the late 1800s and early 20th century. Most of his poems are written in standard English. A small part of them are written in black dialects. Academics generally agree that his dialect-based poems of the Southern Civilizations, pre-civil war, are even better. Dunbar was one of the first African-American writers recognized by the United States. Dunbar lived in an era of discrimination against blacks. Although talented, Dunbar was unfairly treated by blacks and was tortured by poverty and disease throughout his life. He died of illness at the age of 33.
