The high and low density sandwich CsI photocathodes have been developed and optimized toyield relatively stable and efficient systems for photon detection in the 0.1—10 keV region. For sandwich CsIphotocathodes, the photon detecting effeciency is 2—10 times higher than that obtained with the high densityCsI photocathodes in the 0.1—10 keV region. The energy distributions of the photoemitted secondaryelectrons have been measured to be similar to the high density photocathodes and with about 2eV full-width-half-maximum.The high efficiencies and relatively narrow emitted electron energy distributions have madethe CsI transmission photocathodes extensively useful in soft X-ray detectors and counters especially in X-raystreak camera applications.
