据美刊《战略和战术》1978年第74期报道,从1979年8月1日起,美国海军陆战队将重新改组其步兵营,目前每个营是4个步兵连,新营减到3个。但是,第四个连仍然保留,作为“灵活”组织,一俟全面动员时,将增加给每个营。目前,营的重武器是作为营部和支援连的一部分,现在要予以加强,组成一个单独的武器连,达个连包括1个81毫米迫击炮排,1个“龙”式反坦克导弹排(32具“龙”式),1个机枪分队,不久,还将拥有1个“红眼”单兵防空导弹分队。与美国陆军所建议的师重新改组方案相似,改组是努力使所有的管理职能移到营和上级单位,使连长能够腾出更多的时间进行训练和战斗。当然,海军陆战队的每个步兵营还得有一个管理连,才能完成这个任务。
